Barrie and Simcoe County together hold over half a million people, but they are spread across a growing city, commuter towns, farm townships and lakeside communities. That variety is the main planning challenge. A business in Barrie can reach a lot of buyers, but only if it decides which of these markets it is really serving.
The region in numbers
Barrie is the hub; the 16 County municipalities around it vary from about 10,000 to 44,000 people. The 2021 Census counted 147,829 residents in Barrie. The wider Simcoe County census division, which includes Barrie, Orillia and First Nations reserves, totalled 533,169.
The larger County municipalities in 2021 were:
| Municipality | 2021 population |
|---|---|
| New Tecumseth (Alliston, Beeton, Tottenham) | 43,948 |
| Innisfil | 43,326 |
| Bradford West Gwillimbury | 42,880 |
| Wasaga Beach | 24,862 |
| Collingwood | 24,811 |
| Oro-Medonte | 23,017 |
| Essa (including Angus) | 22,970 |
| Springwater | 21,701 |
Smaller townships such as Tiny, Tay, Severn, Ramara and Adjala-Tosorontio each had between about 10,000 and 15,000 people, often spread across many small communities and beaches.
How the County is governed
Simcoe County is an upper-tier government with 16 member municipalities, while Barrie and Orillia stand apart. The County's municipal partners page lists the towns and townships. Barrie and Orillia are separated cities with their own councils, though the County provides paramedic and social services to them.
For a growing business, that means local rules and contacts differ depending on whether you're in Barrie, Orillia or a County municipality. Check business licensing or permits with the right municipality; we don't advise on compliance.
Barrie: growth and a new boundary
Barrie's limits grew on January 1, 2026, when it annexed about 1,769 hectares, mainly from Springwater. The City's boundary expansion page covers the change. Growth areas named in the City's planning include the Hewitt's and Salem secondary plan areas in the south.
Business districts include the Downtown Barrie BIA and its Urban Growth Centre, the Allandale Waterfront and Barrie South GO station areas, and commercial corridors along Bayfield Street, Essa Road, Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive. Each corridor serves a slightly different part of the city.
Housing is mostly houses: about 58% of Barrie's occupied dwellings were single-detached in 2021, with fewer than one in twelve in buildings of five or more storeys. Owner-occupiers dominate, which suits home-services, retail and family-oriented businesses.
Commuter towns to the south
Innisfil, Bradford West Gwillimbury and New Tecumseth face both Barrie and the GTA. Bradford sits near York Region; Innisfil runs along Lake Simcoe directly south of Barrie; New Tecumseth includes Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham. Buyers here may work in the GTA and shop in either direction.
That makes them worth testing as second markets for a Barrie business, or as northern edges for a York Region business. Our GTA page covers the other side of that boundary.
Lakeside and seasonal communities
Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, Tiny, Tay and the Lake Simcoe shoreline have strong seasonal swings. Across the County, single-detached houses ranged from just over 56% of dwellings in Collingwood to about 97% in Tiny, which hints at the cottage and rural character of much of the area.
For businesses serving these communities, plan for summer peaks from visitors and seasonal residents, and for a smaller year-round base. Track both separately. Collingwood's downtown heritage district and Wasaga Beach's Area One beachfront are distinct commercial hubs.
Employment anchors
A few large sites shape local demand. CFB Borden sits beside Angus in Essa Township, and the Lake Simcoe Regional Airport is in Oro-Medonte. Innisfil Heights is a named employment area. For B2B suppliers, these give a short list of places to start.
How we'd approach Barrie and Simcoe with you
- Decide your core: Barrie, a southern commuter town or a lakeside community.
- Set up local marketing for that core, naming real communities rather than "Simcoe County".
- Split seasonal and year-round measures if you serve lakeside areas.
- Add the next municipality by test, using our expansion approach.

Frequently asked questions
Is Barrie part of Simcoe County?
Not for municipal government. Barrie and Orillia are separated cities, independent of the County, although the County provides some paramedic and social services to them. For marketing purposes, though, many businesses treat Barrie as the hub of a wider Simcoe market.
What changed with Barrie's boundary in 2026?
On January 1, 2026, Barrie annexed about 1,769 hectares, mostly from Springwater Township, in two sections. If your service area or local pages describe Barrie's limits, it's worth updating them. The City's boundary expansion page has the details.
How should we handle seasonal towns like Wasaga Beach?
Plan two calendars. Lakeside communities see summer visitors and seasonal residents, while year-round residents keep steadier demand. Measure each separately so a strong July doesn't hide a weak January.
Should a Barrie business also target Innisfil and Bradford?
Often yes. Innisfil sits directly south of Barrie, and Bradford West Gwillimbury lies further south toward York Region. Both had over 40,000 residents in 2021. Test one at a time with its own local page and measure enquiries before adding the next.
